Peranakan Motif Inspired Pencil Set
About the Peranakans
The wealthy Peranakan Chinese community commissioned such colourful enamelled porcelain from Jingdezhen in China. The brilliant colours reflect the Peranakan taste, marking these as distinctive from traditional Chinese porcelain. Yet the 8 auspicious Buddhist symbols ((Wheel of Life, Conch Shell, Umbrella, Canopy, Lotus, Vase, Pair of Fish and Eternal Knot) have been preserved as decorative motifs, indicating the community's roots.
The descendants of early immigrants from China and India intermarried with local Malay women, the Peranakans were an affluent community in the Straits colonies of Singapore, Penang and Malacca, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
These pencils are dressed in the pink, yellow and pistachio green variations of signature peony flower motif found on the Peranakan Porcelain.
